AstraZeneca has agreed to pay about $100m (£190m) for a controversial Israeli drug that was branded as Viagra.
It is the latest in a string of similar deals targeting Indian companies.
The drug, dubbed the “Paxil”, has been a key selling point for Israeli company Mylan Inc.
Paxil is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, which increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The drug works by blocking a protein called PDE5, which in turn relaxes the muscles of blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow into the penis.
The deal, which is understood to be the first in Israel to make such deals for Pfizer Inc., will cost $500m (£250m) in Israel.
The deal was announced by Mylan, which had previously been one of the largest Israeli drugmakers.
Israel has been accused of approving Viagra and other drugs for medical purposes. Pfizer said it would pay for the drug to be manufactured in Israel and for a license to AstraZeneca.
Pfizer said it had consulted with AstraZeneca and had agreed to make the deal for Israel and would pay Pfizer $500m (£250m) in cash and other payments.
Pfizer said it would pay for the sale of the drug to AstraZeneca, which is not its parent company, as it will manufacture it at an overseas site and sell it to other companies in its pipeline.
Mylan has said it will not be able to purchase the rights to the drug until the Israeli government has consulted with AstraZeneca.
The company said it will only buy the drug from Israel and will pay for the price of it. It said it would not disclose the price of the drug until the deal is completed and AstraZeneca will have received the agreement from Israel.
Israel’s public health ministry is warning about the proposed divestments and the sale of Mylan’s drug, which it plans to manufacture at an overseas site.

The ministry said the deal would be “very similar” to AstraZeneca’s deal with Mylan, which had already been in the works, but has been in the works for more than three years.
In June, the ministry was investigating the sale of Mylan’s drug for $1.2bn, which it said was “very similar” to Pfizer’s deal to make Viagra available for free.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Israel’s medical chief medical officer, Dr. Saadat Hashem, said the ministry was monitoring Pfizer’s sales and the deals it was making with AstraZeneca.
“This deal is a strategic partnership with AstraZeneca, and the company has agreed to make a strategic partnership with AstraZeneca,” he said.
